Colorized

Risograph and letterpress, Kingston

Priced per pull, per colour, per sheet

Colorized is a two-press shop: a risograph for short runs in flat ink and a 1962 Heidelberg for letterpress. Every price on this site is per pull and per colour, so a hundred two-colour A5 flyers is a sum you can do yourself before you write to us. Artwork requirements are on the price list, not buried in an email chain.

What the process actually does

Registration is off by a millimetre and that is the medium, not a mistake

Risograph lays one flat ink at a time on a drum. Two colours means two passes through a machine that does not know where the first one landed to better than about a millimetre.

People arrive expecting offset and leave with something better, but only if they know what they are buying first. Colours are flat and cannot be mixed on the sheet except by overprinting, which makes a third colour we can show you on a swatch. Fine registration between two inks is not achievable and designs that depend on it will disappoint you. Large solid areas roller-mark. Fluorescent pink cannot be reproduced by any other process available on this island, which is why half the work that comes through this shop uses it. All of that is on the price list next to the prices, because a customer who is surprised at collection is a customer we failed at the quote.

What customers say

4.75 out of 5 · 8 reviews
A twelve-dollar test pull changed my whole design before I spent anything.
Fifty zines, folded and stitched, four days, stock shown at cost on the invoice.
Told me the riso could not hold my registration and printed it letterpress.
Registration is a millimetre out. They say so everywhere. Design for it.
The fluorescent pink is the reason to come here. Nothing else prints it.
Roller marks on a run. Reprinted free and written up on their own site.
Letterpress setup fee is real money. Worth it on the second run.
Every price is per pull per colour. I costed the job before emailing.

What do you need from me?
Separated files if you have them, one layer per ink, at 300dpi. A flat PDF is fine too and we will separate it, which takes an hour and is charged as an hour. Say which ink you want where; do not assume the file’s colours are the ones we have.
How accurate is the registration?
About a millimetre on the risograph, because each colour is a separate pass and the machine was designed for church newsletters rather than for fine art. Design around it. Letterpress is far tighter but is one colour per pass with its own setup fee.
What does a run actually cost?
Pulls times colours, plus stock at cost plus ten per cent. A hundred two-colour A5 flyers is thirty-four plus twenty-six, plus the paper. Every price break is published so you can do the sum before writing to us.
Can you match a Pantone?
No, and anybody who tells you they can on a riso is guessing. There are fourteen inks on the shelf, they are flat, and overprinting two makes a third that we can show you on a swatch card before you commit.
How long does it take?
Forty-eight hours on the risograph for anything that is not folded or stitched, four working days for a zine, and a week to ten days for letterpress because the make-ready cannot be rushed honestly.
What will you not print?
Long runs, anything needing tight registration between colours, and full-colour photographic work. Both presses are wrong for those. We will name the shop that is right for it and take nothing for the referral.
Can I see the paper first?
Yes, and you should. Sixteen stocks are in the shop, you are welcome to handle all of them, and a twelve-dollar test pull on the one you choose has saved a lot of people a lot more than twelve dollars.
