Printing since 2017

A risograph, a Heidelberg from 1962, and two people

Two presses that do two entirely different things, and a rule against pretending either of them is the other.

The shop

Colorized opened in 2017 with a second-hand risograph bought from a church in Portmore. The Heidelberg platen arrived two years later, was rebuilt over eight months, and was built in 1962.

Fourteen inks on the shelf including three fluorescents. Every price is per pull and per colour and the stock is charged at cost plus ten per cent, with the invoice showing both numbers. Nobody here will quote you a single mysterious figure for a print job.

We turn away work the presses are wrong for — long runs, tight registration, full-colour photography — and we say which shop to take it to. It costs us perhaps a job a week and it is why the work we do take comes out well.

A twelve-dollar test pull changed my whole design before I spent anything.
Fifty zines, folded and stitched, four days, stock shown at cost on the invoice.
Told me the riso could not hold my registration and printed it letterpress.
Registration is a millimetre out. They say so everywhere. Design for it.
